ABUJA — Two referees from Akwa Ibom State, Akan Udoette and Zechariah Nde, have successfully passed the 2026 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Group A Referees Fitness Test held in Abuja.

The development has been welcomed by the Akwa Ibom State Referees Council, which described the performance of the two officials as a significant achievement for the state and a positive indication of the quality of football officiating talents emerging from the state.

In a congratulatory message signed by Nsikakabasi Akpan, Publicity Secretary of the Akwa Ibom State Referees Council, the council commended Udoette and Nde for their successful performance at the fitness assessment.

The council said their achievement was a proud moment for Akwa Ibom and expressed optimism that the two referees would build on the success as the new football season gets underway.

The successful completion of the fitness test is an important requirement for referees seeking to officiate at the highest levels of domestic football. It demonstrates the officials' physical readiness and ability to meet the demanding standards expected in professional matches.

Beyond the immediate achievement of the two referees, their success also highlights the importance of strengthening football development structures at the grassroots and local league levels.

A strong local football system provides an avenue for young players, coaches, referees, match commissioners and other football administrators to develop the experience required to progress into professional and national competitions.

For Akwa Ibom, the emergence of referees capable of meeting NPFL fitness standards represents an opportunity to deepen the state's contribution not only to football playing talent but also to sports management, administration and officiating.

Regular and properly organised local competitions can help identify promising referees early, provide them with practical match experience and prepare them for higher-level assessments. Such a pathway can ultimately produce more officials capable of handling professional and potentially international assignments.

Football lovers in Akwa Ibom have welcomed the news, with many viewing the success as encouraging for the state's football community. Supporters and stakeholders have also expressed hope that the achievement will motivate other young people interested in refereeing to take the profession seriously.

The development has equally generated positive sentiment among residents who see sporting success as an important part of Akwa Ibom's identity and youth-development agenda. The progress of local referees, they believe, should be supported alongside the development of footballers and coaches.

The success of Udoette and Nde therefore goes beyond personal advancement. It adds to the growing pool of qualified football officials from Akwa Ibom and reinforces the need for sustained investment in local competitions, referee education, fitness programmes and sports administration.

With the 2026/27 football season approaching, attention will now turn to how the two officials translate their successful fitness assessment into quality performances on the field.

The Akwa Ibom State Referees Council has meanwhile wished both referees greater success in the new season, as they take another step forward in their officiating careers.
