AUGUST MEETING: ACU Women Wing Reaffirms Commitment to Agwa Development, Honours Community Builders

OWERRI, IMO STATE — The Women Wing of the Agwa Central Union (ACU) has reaffirmed its commitment to the development of Agwa community, particularly the completion of the Agwa Women Multipurpose Hall, as it held its 2026 August Meeting in Owerri, Imo State.
The event, held on Saturday, August 15, 2026, at Double Day Hotel and Suites, Owerri, brought together women from Agwa and its various branches, community leaders, award recipients and other stakeholders under the theme, “Women As Home Builders.”
The programme was organised as part of the annual August Meeting tradition, which provides an opportunity for women to come together, assess developments within their families and community, and chart a course for the future.
Addressing participants at the event, the ACU Women Wing President-General, Lady Dorathy Utazi, PhD, described women as critical pillars of family and community development.
According to her, the success of most families and communities is often linked to the sacrifices, commitment and contributions of women who work behind the scenes to sustain their homes and support development initiatives.
Dr. Utazi explained that the August Meeting goes beyond social gathering, stressing that it serves as a period for community and family introspection, as well as an opportunity for women to review progress made politically, socially and economically.
She called for greater partnership among Agwa sons and daughters, particularly in the areas of community development, unity, peace and women empowerment.
The ACU Women Wing President-General also reaffirmed the organisation’s determination to complete the Agwa Women Multipurpose Hall, a project initiated by the women to provide a permanent and functional facility for their activities and meetings.
She said the project remained an important priority of the women and appealed for continued support from individuals, organisations and well-meaning Agwa sons and daughters to ensure its completion.
The President-General further commended the Agwa Central Union, led by Mr. Nduka Ozor, and the Agwa Diaspora Forum Worldwide, led by High Chief Sir Prof. Humphrey Chukwuemeka Ugo, Ugwumba I of Agwa Clan, for their contributions to the peace, unity and development of Agwa.
She also acknowledged the contributions of Agwa sons and daughters who have continued to support initiatives aimed at improving the community.
Since its formation, the ACU Women Wing has played a significant role in community affairs, contributing financially and through other forms of support to initiatives connected to peace, security and development in Agwa.
Dr. Utazi described these contributions as evidence of the capacity of women to influence positive change beyond their individual families.
A major highlight of the August Meeting was the presentation of merit and community development awards to individuals who were recognised for their contributions to Agwa and humanity.
Among those honoured were Mrs. Chinyere Amanze Obi, General Treasurer of the ACU Women Wing; Mrs. Celestina Kelechi Nwaeze; Dr. Kelechi Achilike; Prince Chidi Nwaokeocha (Ezembi); Mr. Cajetan Onuegbu; and Hon. Goddey Onyewuchi Nwabekee, ADC candidate for Oguta State Constituency in the 2027 Imo State House of Assembly election.
Also recognised with the Community Development Giant Stride Award were Prof. Humphrey Chukwuemeka Ugo and Dr. Kevin Ihetu, while Hon. Emma Onwuzugha received the Community Giant Stride Award. Pharm. Godson Egbulugha was also listed among those recognised at the event.
Presenting the awards, Dr. Utazi urged the recipients not to regard the honours merely as recognition of past achievements but as a call to do more for Agwa and humanity.
She said the contributions of the awardees demonstrated that individuals could make meaningful differences in their communities through service, sacrifice and commitment.
The women also expressed appreciation to Hon. Amanze Obi, PhD, for his support for the development of Agwa and for his generous donation of facilities used by the women for their meetings.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Amanze commended the ACU Women Wing for organising the programme and for consistently supporting community development initiatives.
He also appreciated the women for recognising his wife, Mrs. Chinyere Amanze Obi, among the award recipients.
Another award recipient, Hon. Goddey Onyewuchi Nwabekee, thanked the ACU Women Wing for acknowledging his efforts and contributions to the community.
Nwabekee pledged to continue supporting the women and initiatives aimed at advancing the interests and development of Agwa.
The event was coordinated by a committee comprising Mrs. Vivian Amanfor, Planning Committee Chairman; Mrs. Onwuzugha Rebecca, Financial Secretary; and Mrs. Akudo Achuokwu, Award Planning Committee Secretary.
Other women leaders who participated included Mrs. Faith Nwanochi, Lagos State Chairlady; Mrs. Kelechi Nwaeze, Owerri Chairlady; Mrs. Onyinyechi, Aba Chairlady; Mrs. Pauline Ugwuakolam, Onitsha Chairlady; Mrs. Ngozi Anayaegwu, Enugu Chairlady; and Mrs. Nkeiru Uzoma, Port Harcourt Chairlady.
The gathering underscored the growing role of women in community mobilisation and development, with participants calling for stronger cooperation among Agwa women across different locations.
Owerri, the capital of Imo State in southeastern Nigeria, served as the venue for the 2026 ACU Women Wing August Meeting. The city is a major administrative, commercial and social centre in the state and regularly hosts community, cultural and organisational gatherings involving people from across Imo and neighbouring communities.
Agwa, in Oguta Local Government Area of Imo State, is one of the prominent communities in the area and has a large population of indigenes living both within Nigeria and in the diaspora. Community organisations such as the Agwa Central Union and its Women Wing play important roles in coordinating development initiatives, promoting unity and supporting community welfare.
The 2026 August Meeting therefore provided a platform for Agwa women to strengthen their collective voice, celebrate individuals contributing to community development and renew their commitment to peace, unity, empowerment and sustainable development.
