Chinedu Ozor Dies After Collapsing During Katsina United Friendly

KATSINA, Nigeria — Katsina United footballer Chinedu Ozor has died after reportedly collapsing during a friendly match against Niger Tornadoes at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium in Katsina.
Ozor reportedly suffered the medical emergency during the encounter and was attended to following the incident. He subsequently passed away, throwing the players, officials and football community into mourning.
The Muhammadu Dikko Stadium, located in Katsina, is the home ground of Katsina United and has hosted numerous Nigeria Premier Football League fixtures.
The circumstances surrounding Ozor’s death have generated widespread reactions, particularly following reports circulating on social media claiming that the player had regained consciousness after being pronounced dead.
However, a clarification concerning the incident said such reports are false and should be disregarded.
According to the clarification, Ozor’s family, devastated by the news and hoping that their son might still be alive, requested that further medical confirmation be conducted before his body was taken to the morgue.
The family’s request for additional confirmation, the statement stressed, should not be interpreted as evidence that Ozor regained consciousness or returned to life.
The clarification was issued amid growing reports and social media posts suggesting that the footballer had survived the incident. It urged media organisations, bloggers and members of the public to exercise restraint and stop circulating unverified information about the player’s condition.
“Reports claiming that he later regained consciousness or ‘came back to life’ are false and should be disregarded,” the clarification stated.
Ozor was an experienced Nigerian professional footballer who played as a defender. Available football records show that he had previously featured for Katsina United before moving to Heartland and later Kano Pillars.
His career also included spells with clubs such as Sunshine Stars and Lobi Stars. Records show that he represented Heartland during the 2024/25 campaign before joining Kano Pillars in July 2025.
His death has consequently sent shockwaves through the Nigerian football community, with the circumstances of his collapse serving as a painful reminder of the health emergencies that can occur during sporting activities.
The football community has been urged to respect the privacy of Ozor’s family, teammates and friends as they come to terms with the loss.
The family and those close to the player are expected to provide further information concerning funeral arrangements and other details in due course.
For now, tributes continue to pour in for the footballer, whose death has cut short his career and left his teammates and supporters grieving.
