Enugu State Government has approved a new minimum pension of N32,000 for local government retirees across the state, in a move aimed at improving the welfare of former council workers and cushioning the impact of rising living costs.
The approval is expected to benefit retirees across the state’s 17 local government areas, many of whom have consistently called for an upward review of their pension payments to reflect current economic realities.
The state government said the decision was driven by its commitment to strengthening social protection and ensuring that senior citizens who served the state at the grassroots receive improved support in retirement.
Under the new arrangement, the N32,000 benchmark will serve as the minimum pension payable to eligible local government retirees. The adjustment is expected to provide additional financial relief to pensioners facing increasing costs of food, healthcare, transportation and other basic necessities.
Government officials explained that implementation would commence after the completion of necessary administrative procedures. These processes include the verification of eligible retirees, updating of payroll records and securing the required budgetary approvals.
The measures, according to the government, are intended to ensure that the revised pension payments are properly captured and disbursed without administrative complications.
The development has attracted positive reactions from pensioner associations and labour stakeholders in the state, who described the approval as timely and responsive to the economic difficulties confronting retirees.
They, however, urged the state government to expedite the implementation process to enable beneficiaries to begin receiving the improved pension without unnecessary delays.
Pensioners have over the years expressed concerns about the adequacy of their retirement income, particularly amid rising prices of essential goods and services.
For many former local government employees, the pension adjustment is seen as an important step toward addressing financial pressures in retirement and recognising their contributions to public service at the grassroots.
The N32,000 minimum pension also comes at a time when governments across Nigeria are under pressure to strengthen social protection measures and improve the purchasing power of vulnerable groups affected by the rising cost of living.
The Enugu State Government is expected to complete the verification and payroll processes before the new pension benchmark becomes fully operational.
With thousands of retirees potentially affected by the adjustment, pensioner groups are expected to continue engaging with the government on the timeline for implementation and payment.
The approval has therefore been welcomed as a significant welfare measure, while attention now shifts to the speed and effectiveness of its implementation.
