Fresh tragedy struck the popular Okigwe Eke Market in Okigwe Local Government Area of Imo State on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, as a devastating fire outbreak razed several shops and destroyed goods worth millions of naira, leaving traders and business owners counting enormous losses.
The fire, which reportedly started during the day, spread rapidly through sections of the market, consuming shops and valuable merchandise before it could be brought under control. Panic engulfed the market as traders and residents desperately tried to salvage whatever they could from the raging inferno.
Eyewitnesses said the absence of an immediate and effective firefighting response allowed the flames to spread uncontrollably. Volunteers, local residents and emergency responders battled the fire with limited resources while many helpless shop owners watched years of investment reduced to ashes.
As of the time of filing this report, the Imo State Government and the Okigwe Local Government Council had yet to issue an official statement on the cause of the incident or the estimated extent of the damage. Authorities have also not announced whether an investigation has commenced to determine the source of the fire.
The latest incident has renewed concerns over the level of fire safety infrastructure in public markets across Imo State, particularly at the Okigwe Eke Market, one of the state's major commercial centres. Traders lamented that the market lacks adequate firefighting equipment, emergency water points and other essential safety facilities expected in a busy public market.
Observers argue that local governments, which have statutory responsibilities for the administration and maintenance of many public markets, must provide an enabling environment for traders by ensuring functional fire prevention systems, emergency response mechanisms, proper electrical inspections and regular safety audits. The absence of these critical facilities has continued to expose traders to avoidable risks and devastating economic losses.
The recurrence of the disaster has become even more alarming because the same Okigwe Eke Market was similarly gutted by fire on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, resulting in the destruction of goods and stalls worth millions of naira. Barely six months later, another major fire has occurred on yet another Tuesday, raising serious questions about whether the earlier incident was thoroughly investigated and whether any preventive recommendations were implemented.
Many affected traders expressed frustration that despite the previous tragedy, little appeared to have changed regarding market safety, emergency preparedness and fire prevention measures. They called on the relevant authorities to conduct a transparent investigation into both incidents and make the findings public to prevent future occurrences.
The repeated outbreaks have plunged numerous families into financial hardship, wiping out business capital accumulated over many years. For many traders, the market represents their primary source of livelihood, making the destruction particularly devastating amid prevailing economic challenges.
Stakeholders have urged the Imo State Government, the Okigwe Local Government Council and relevant emergency management agencies to urgently review safety standards in public markets across the state. They also called for the establishment of fully equipped fire stations within strategic commercial centres, improved emergency response capacity, installation of fire hydrants and enforcement of market safety regulations.
As affected traders begin the painful process of assessing their losses, many hope that this latest tragedy will serve as a turning point, prompting decisive government action to protect lives, safeguard investments and prevent another avoidable disaster at one of Imo State's most important commercial markets.
