Gunmen Attack Adeleke’s Convoy in Osogbo, Security Operatives Repel Assailants

OSOGBO, Osun State — Gunmen on Wednesday attacked the convoy of Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, in Osogbo, triggering an exchange of gunfire between the suspected attackers and security personnel attached to the governor.
The incident occurred shortly after Adeleke visited the palace of the Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Oyetunji, as part of his engagements in the state capital.
According to reports, the attack lasted between 12 and 15 minutes as security operatives attached to the governor’s convoy engaged the suspected gunmen in a gun battle.
The attackers reportedly opened fire on the convoy before security personnel responded and successfully repelled them.
The Osun State Commissioner for Information, Kolapo Alimi, was reported to have confirmed the incident, stating that the security personnel attached to the governor’s convoy were able to fend off the attackers.
As of the time of filing this report, there were no confirmed reports of casualties among the governor, his aides, security personnel or members of the public.
The motive behind the attack was not immediately known, while the identities and whereabouts of the suspected attackers remained unclear.
The incident has raised concerns over security in Osogbo, particularly given the high-profile nature of the governor’s movement and the timing of the attack.
Adeleke had earlier been at the centre of political activities in the state after receiving his Certificate of Return from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), following his re-election as governor of Osun State.
The governor’s convoy was reportedly returning from his visit to the Ataoja’s palace when the gunmen launched the attack.
Security agencies are expected to investigate the incident and establish the circumstances surrounding the attack, including the identity of those responsible and their motive.
The development comes amid heightened political activities in Osun following the governor’s re-election and preparations for the next phase of his administration.
Authorities had yet to announce any arrest in connection with the incident as of publication.
The attack also underscores the continuing security challenges confronting parts of the country, where attacks on government officials, security personnel and public institutions have remained a major concern.
