Ihioma, Orlu Local Government Area, Imo State, Nigeria- Ihioma Football Club began the MBIKA 2027 Orlu Football Tournament on a winning note on Sunday, defeating Amaifeke 2-1 in the opening fixture played at the Ihioma Football Pitch in Orlu Local Government Area of Imo State.

The keenly contested encounter attracted football enthusiasts, community leaders, political stakeholders and sports lovers who gathered to witness the commencement of the grassroots football tournament sponsored by Hon. Isaac Ugochukwu Mbika, popularly known as “Powerful.”

The opening ceremony featured a strong grassroots presence, with members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), community leaders and other dignitaries attending the event.

Among those present were the ADC Imo State Chairman, Prof. James Okoroma; Deputy State Chairman, Hon. Chief Demian Ezeagu; Hon. Vin Odokwu; former Commissioner of Health; Comr. Diamond Bryan Agu, spokesperson of the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP); former Super Eagles defender Friday Onyeukwu; Hon. Chukwuemeka Nwaokeke, popularly known as Iroko; Hon. Mrs. Uju Ihejiagwa, State Woman Leader; Mr. Timothy Obodozie, State Treasurer; and other political, community and sports personalities.

The official kick-off was performed by Mbika, who is the African Democratic Congress candidate for Orlu State Constituency in the 2027 Imo State House of Assembly election.
Reports on the outcome of the ADC's 2027 primaries list Isaac Ugochukwu Mbika among the party's elected candidates for the Imo State House of Assembly, representing Orlu State Constituency.

Ihioma capitalised on home advantage to secure the 2-1 victory over Amaifeke, earning the first bragging rights of the tournament and giving the home supporters reason to celebrate.

The tournament is expected to provide a platform for young footballers from Orlu and neighbouring communities to showcase their abilities while competing for honours.

Speaking to journalists after the opening ceremony, Mbika said the tournament was originally scheduled to hold two years ago but was postponed because of logistical challenges.

“This tournament would have been done two years ago, but due to logistics reasons, it was moved to this moment. But as you can see, we had a large turnout and the love and support is much,” he said.

Mbika said the competition was not solely about winning trophies, stressing that talent identification and development were central to the initiative.

“The aim is to be able to get talents who will become future stars. I want to be able to find talents here who we can promote and expose to the world so they can make it big and help their society,” he said.

The sponsor also linked the tournament to his personal experience in football, describing the initiative as an opportunity to give back to the community and encourage young people to pursue productive activities.

“As a successful footballer who made it in my prime days, I want to give back to the society that made me, and fight crime through sports,” Mbika added.

The MBIKA 2027 tournament therefore combines competitive football with grassroots talent development, giving participating teams an opportunity to expose promising players who could eventually progress to professional football.

The opening fixture has set the stage for subsequent matches, with participating teams expected to battle for supremacy as the tournament progresses.

The event also adds a grassroots sports dimension to Mbika's political profile ahead of the 2027 election. His emergence as the ADC candidate for Orlu State Constituency has been reported by multiple Nigerian news organisations following the party's completion of its 2027 primaries.

For the young footballers participating in the competition, however, the focus remains on the pitch, with the tournament providing an opportunity to compete, gain exposure and attract attention from football scouts and talent developers.

The MBIKA 2027 Orlu Football Tournament now moves into its next phase, with supporters looking forward to more exciting matches and the emergence of players capable of progressing from grassroots football to the professional stage.
