Kwara State Government has approved and disbursed a total of ₦965 million in vehicle support to the 193 councillors serving across the 16 local government areas of the state, in a move aimed at enhancing grassroots governance and improving service delivery.
The intervention is designed to strengthen the operational capacity of councillors, enabling them to effectively discharge their legislative and oversight responsibilities while maintaining closer engagement with their constituents.
One of the beneficiaries, Hon. Onibonoje Maruf Olayinka, Councillor representing Ubandawaki Ward in Ilorin West Local Government Area, commended Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for the initiative, describing it as a demonstration of visionary leadership and inclusive governance.
Speaking through a statement shared on his Facebook page, Olayinka said the gesture reflects the administration's understanding of the challenges faced by councillors in carrying out their duties and underscores the government's commitment to supporting democratic institutions at the grassroots level.
According to him, the vehicle support will significantly enhance the ability of councillors to monitor ongoing projects, respond promptly to community concerns, and strengthen the link between government and the people.
He noted that councillors play a vital role in promoting development, facilitating community engagement, and ensuring that government policies and programmes reach the grassroots effectively.
Olayinka further stated that improved mobility would allow elected representatives to deepen their interactions with residents, identify emerging needs more efficiently, and contribute more meaningfully to local development efforts.
"The support has further strengthened our resolve to continue serving our constituents diligently and contributing meaningfully to the development of Kwara State," he stated.
The disbursement is seen as part of the Kwara State Government's broader efforts to strengthen local governance structures and improve the effectiveness of elected officials in delivering the dividends of democracy to communities across the state.
