Nwakaibie Questions Timing of Mbah’s 23 New Political Appointments as 2027 Election Season Nears

ENUGU, Enugu State — The appointment of 23 new Special Advisers and Senior Special Assistants by Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah has generated questions over the timing, political implications and expected impact of the appointments as preparations for the 2027 general elections gradually intensify.
The appointments, announced by the state government as part of efforts to strengthen administration, cover areas including policy implementation, public engagement, mobilisation, infrastructure, rural development and other aspects of governance.
While the appointment of aides is within the prerogative of the governor, political observers and stakeholders have begun to question whether the latest exercise is primarily aimed at improving government operations or also carries an electoral consideration ahead of 2027.
The concerns were raised by the Lion Building Media Team for Nwakaibie, which said government appointments should be assessed on the basis of competence, inclusiveness and the actual requirements of effective administration.
The group argued that appointments to government positions should not be driven principally by political calculations, particularly as the state approaches another election cycle.
According to the team, the timing of the appointments has made it necessary for the government to explain how the new appointees will contribute to measurable improvements in governance and public service delivery.
It also raised concerns among some party stakeholders over the recognition given to individuals who supported the administration and the party during the 2023 election.
The team questioned whether some of those who contributed to the electoral success of the administration had received adequate recognition, especially with the announcement of fresh appointments as preparations for the next election begin.
It, however, stressed that such concerns should be addressed through transparent engagement rather than being dismissed as political complaints.
The group said the central issue should be the ability of the new appointees to deliver results and contribute positively to the administration.
It noted that portfolios relating to infrastructure, rural development, policy implementation and public engagement could have a direct impact on communities if properly executed.
The controversy surrounding the appointments comes at a time when political activities across Nigeria are gradually increasing ahead of the 2027 elections, with political parties, aspirants and stakeholders beginning to reposition themselves.
Analysts say appointments made close to an election can sometimes serve both administrative and political purposes, although the actual intentions behind individual appointments can only be established through the responsibilities assigned to the appointees and the results they eventually deliver.
For Enugu residents, the group said, the priority should remain effective governance, accountability and improved public confidence in government institutions.
It urged the administration to ensure that the new appointments translate into tangible benefits for citizens rather than becoming instruments for political mobilisation.
The Lion Building Media Team for Nwakaibie maintained that Enugu needs institutions capable of delivering results throughout the political cycle and not structures that appear to become more active only when another election is approaching.
The team concluded that the success of the appointments would ultimately be determined by their impact on governance, public service delivery and the welfare of residents.
It declared that “Enugu's Future Is Bright with Nwakaibie,” signalling its continued political interest and positioning ahead of the 2027 electoral season.
