Peter Obi, Kwankwaso Lead NDC Meeting With Bauchi, Sokoto, Borno Governorship Candidates

MAITAMA, ABUJA — The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, alongside his running mate, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, on Monday led a high-level political meeting with the party’s governorship candidates from Bauchi, Sokoto and Borno states.
The meeting, held at Senator Kwankwaso’s residence in Maitama, Abuja, brought together key national and state leaders of the NDC as part of ongoing consultations and efforts to strengthen the party’s political structure ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Among those in attendance were the NDC governorship candidates for the three states: Barrister Ibrahim Muhammad Kashim of Bauchi State, Dr. Shamsu Aliyu of Sokoto State, and Admiral Sunusi Sir Kashim Ibrahim (Rtd.) of Borno State.
Also present were former political heavyweight and NDC leader, Engineer Buba Galadima; the NDC Chairman in Kebbi State, Alhaji Mustapha Umar; and the NDC Chairman in Sokoto State, Alhaji Bello Sani Yabo, alongside other party leaders and stakeholders.
The meeting took place in Maitama, one of Abuja’s most prominent districts and a major hub for diplomatic missions, government officials, political leaders and high-level private residences. The district, located in the Federal Capital Territory, has traditionally served as a venue for strategic political consultations involving senior Nigerian political figures.
Although details of the discussions were not immediately made public, the gathering is understood to have focused on strengthening the party’s structures in the affected states, improving coordination among its leadership and candidates, and preparing for the political challenges ahead of the 2027 elections.
The participation of governorship candidates from Bauchi, Sokoto and Borno is particularly significant given the strategic importance of the three states across Nigeria’s North-East and North-West political blocs.
Bauchi and Borno are among the key states in the North-East, while Sokoto and neighbouring Kebbi form part of the influential North-West political zone. Political developments in these regions are expected to play an important role in determining the national balance of power in the 2027 elections.
The meeting also comes amid increased political realignment across Nigeria as opposition parties and political actors intensify consultations ahead of the next general elections.
The presence of Obi and Kwankwaso at the meeting underscored the importance attached to building stronger coordination between the national leadership of the NDC and its candidates at the state level.
The discussions are expected to contribute to efforts aimed at consolidating the party’s grassroots structures and expanding its political presence across different parts of the country.
For the governorship candidates, the meeting provided an opportunity to engage directly with the party’s national leadership and other senior stakeholders on issues relating to their respective states and electoral preparations.
The NDC leadership has continued to hold consultations with political stakeholders as the 2027 election cycle gradually gathers momentum.
The meeting in Abuja therefore represents another step in the party’s broader efforts to strengthen internal coordination and position its candidates for the forthcoming elections.
