No fewer than nine persons, including five adults and four children, have been killed following an attack by suspected armed bandits on Ungwan Magaji community in Kamaru Ward of Kauru Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
The incident, which has thrown the community into mourning, was disclosed by community leader Jubal Freeman Dabo. According to him, the victims were attacked and killed in their own community before they were laid to rest.
Dabo dismissed claims that the incident was linked to a farmer-herder conflict, stressing that the attack did not occur on a cattle route or farmland but was a direct assault on residents within their community.
He also expressed disappointment over what he described as the absence of key elected representatives during the burial of the victims. According to Dabo, neither the member representing the constituency in the House of Representatives nor the Chairman of Kauru Local Government Area attended the burial or sent representatives to sympathise with the bereaved families.
He noted that only Senator Barr. Sunday Marshall Katung was represented at the burial ceremony.
The latest attack has renewed concerns over the worsening security situation in parts of Kaduna State, with residents calling for urgent government intervention to protect lives and restore confidence in affected communities.
Observers have condemned the reported absence of the area's elected representatives at the burial, describing it as insensitive and reflective of a troubling disconnect from the people they were elected to serve. They argued that in moments of grief and tragedy, the presence of public officials provides not only moral support to victims' families but also reassures communities that their leaders share in their pains.
Security agencies are yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
