Uzodimma Reaffirms Support for Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education

OWERRI, IMO STATE — Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting the growth and development of the Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education (AIFUE), Owerri.
Uzodimma made the commitment when he received members of the university’s Governing Council, led by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Senator Ahmad Sani Stores, who paid him a courtesy visit after an official engagement at the institution.
The governor said the institution remained an important educational asset to Imo State and the wider South-East, stressing that his administration would continue to provide the necessary support to ensure its development.
According to him, the transformation of Alvan Ikoku from a federal college of education into a conventional university has been pursued as part of efforts to expand access to quality education and create greater opportunities for young people in the state and the region.
Uzodimma expressed satisfaction with the commitment demonstrated by the Governing Council and Management of the university, saying their zeal was encouraging and capable of advancing the institution’s academic and administrative objectives.
He said the progress already recorded at the institution should be sustained through continued collaboration among the Federal Government, the university authorities and relevant stakeholders.
The governor assured the Governing Council and Management that his administration would not abandon the institution after supporting its transformation.
“We will not bring the Institution this far and leave it without the needed support,” Uzodimma said, reiterating his administration’s readiness to assist the university in areas where support is required.
He said the state government would remain committed to initiatives capable of strengthening the institution and positioning it to deliver quality teacher education and other academic programmes.
Uzodimma also acknowledged the importance of AIFUE to the educational development of Imo State and the South-East, describing the institution as a source of pride for the people.
The governor’s assurance comes as the university continues to consolidate its transition and develop its academic, administrative and physical infrastructure.
The Governing Council’s courtesy visit provided an opportunity for the university leadership to engage the governor on matters concerning the institution and to strengthen cooperation with the state government.
Senator Ahmad Sani Stores, who led the delegation, is the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the university’s Governing Council. The council is responsible for providing strategic oversight and governance for the institution.
The meeting also underscores the importance of institutional partnerships in supporting the development of tertiary education in the state.
Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education, located in Owerri, Imo State, has a long history of providing teacher education and professional training. The institution was formerly known as Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education before its transition to a university of education.
Its development into a university is part of the broader effort to strengthen teacher training and tertiary education in Nigeria while creating institutions capable of responding to changing educational and workforce needs.
For Imo State, the institution has remained an important centre for teacher education and academic development. Its location in Owerri also gives it strategic importance within the South-East educational landscape.
The transformation has increased expectations regarding infrastructure, academic programmes, research capacity, student services and other areas necessary for the effective operation of a university.
Governor Uzodimma’s latest assurance signals continued state-level support for the institution as its Governing Council and Management work to consolidate its development.
