2027 OKIGWE NORTH REPS RACE: WHY JAMES UBA ESILE EMERGES AS THE GRASSROOTS CHOICE

‎As political permutations gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections, the emerging contest for Okigwe North Federal Constituency is increasingly revealing a new electoral reality. Unlike 2023, when broader national sentiments and prevailing political currents significantly shaped outcomes, the 2027 race is likely to be driven by more localized considerations—grassroots strength, voter intimacy, organic followership, accessibility, and proven credibility. It is against this backdrop that the aspiration of James Uba Esile is drawing growing attention as a candidacy many believe aligns with the temper of the moment.

‎The argument in favour of Esile is not anchored merely on the politics of rotation, though equity remains an important factor. There is a persuasive case among stakeholders that, in the interest of fairness and balance, Onuimo Local Government Area should produce the next representative for Okigwe North. Yet beyond that equity proposition lies a broader argument that combines justice with merit. For many political observers, Esile is emerging as one of the few aspirants whose profile appears to satisfy both. His growing acceptability is not simply because he comes from the zone many believe should take its turn, but because he has built a political identity rooted in accessibility and direct engagement with the people.

‎As a serving member of the Imo State House of Assembly representing Onuimo State Constituency, and Chairman of the House Committee on Culture, Tourism and Creative Arts, Esile has cultivated a reputation for unusual proximity to his constituents. In an era when many politicians become visible only during election cycles, his supporters point to consistent interaction with communities, frequent consultations, and a grassroots presence that has strengthened trust. That closeness, they argue, has given him a practical understanding of the constituency’s challenges, from roads and security to education, livelihoods, and youth opportunities. Representation, after all, is often more effective when it begins with familiarity with the people’s realities.

‎Perhaps even more significant is the political structure he has built outside conventional party channels. Through the Fresh Air Movement, which he founded, Esile has demonstrated that political capital can be cultivated through people-driven organization rather than elite patronage alone. With a following said to exceed 20,000 supporters across the constituency and beyond, the movement is increasingly viewed not merely as a support base, but as a mobilization asset. In a highly competitive election, such organic followership may prove decisive. For any party seeking not only to win a House of Representatives seat but also strengthen broader electoral prospects, this kind of political infrastructure is difficult to overlook.

‎Yet political structures alone do not sustain serious candidacies without performance. It is here that Esile’s supporters advance what they consider one of his strongest credentials.

‎As a first-term lawmaker, he has been associated with interventions in infrastructure advocacy, education support, sports development, community security initiatives, skill acquisition programmes, and non-refundable trade grants reportedly benefiting households and small-scale traders. His legislative record, including initiatives such as the Onuimo Film Village Bill  effort and other motions, is presented as evidence of a lawmaker attempting to connect representation with measurable outcomes. For many, this record strengthens the argument that his aspiration is not built on rhetoric alone, but on a foundation of demonstrable engagement.

‎There is also a strategic dimension to his candidacy within the broader political environment. Esile’s visible support for the administration of Hope Uzodimma has positioned him, in the eyes of some stakeholders, as a figure of continuity and stability. At a time when questions of succession and political consolidation may influence internal calculations, such alignment may count as an advantage. For those who see value in preserving cohesion within the ruling structure, his candidacy offers a sense of reliability.

‎Ultimately, however, the strongest case being made for Esile is where equity intersects with competence. If the All Progressives Congress seeks to balance fairness with electoral pragmatism, many argue that giving the ticket to Onuimo—and particularly to Esile—would not only honour justice but reward proven capacity. In a political season likely to reward authenticity over artifice, accessibility over aloofness, and organic support over manufactured popularity, Esile is increasingly projected as the aspirant whose profile matches the demands of the moment.

‎The 2027 race remains open, and political equations can evolve. But if grassroots credibility, performance, equity, and broad-based acceptability remain central to the contest, then Hon. Chief (Dr.) James Uba Esile may well be emerging as not only a contender, but the aspirant many see as best positioned to redefine representation in Okigwe North.

‎ For those making that argument, the proposition is simple: choosing Esile may indeed be a game changer.
