The Federal Government has approved the extension of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation programme from three weeks to six weeks as part of ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening youth development and national service.
The new policy marks a significant change to the orientation exercise, which has remained a three-week programme since the establishment of the NYSC in 1973.
According to the government, the expanded orientation period is designed to provide prospective corps members with more comprehensive training in entrepreneurship, vocational skills, civic education, leadership development, security awareness, physical fitness, and the promotion of national values.
Officials said the additional three weeks will enable participants to acquire practical skills that promote self-reliance while enhancing their preparedness for community service and nation-building.
The government also stated that the extended programme is expected to improve the quality of orientation activities, strengthen discipline, and broaden youth empowerment initiatives under the NYSC scheme.
Further details regarding the implementation timeline, commencement date, and operational guidelines are expected to be released by the relevant authorities.
