A source at the African Democratic Congress (ADC) national headquarters has disclosed that legal practitioner and politician, Kenneth Okonkwo, has reportedly declined a proposed appointment as Presidential Campaign Spokesman for the anticipated Atiku Abubakar/Rotimi Amaechi presidential campaign council.
According to the source, the development is linked to unsuccessful efforts to secure former World Trade Organization Director-General, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, as the vice-presidential candidate on the proposed ticket.
The source further claimed that Okonkwo had expected the vice-presidential slot to be ceded to a candidate from the South-East based on what was described as a gentleman's understanding with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
However, the consideration of former Rivers State Governor and former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, for the vice-presidential position is said to have generated dissatisfaction within sections of the emerging political arrangement.
The source alleged that Okonkwo views the development as a breach of trust and has consequently distanced himself from the proposed campaign structure.
Efforts to obtain official confirmation from the parties involved were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
This remains a developing story, and further details are expected to emerge in the coming days.
