‎Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has cautioned that Nigeria must do everything possible to prevent a repeat of the civil war, warning that many of the underlying issues that fueled the 1967–1970 conflict remain unresolved. He stressed that preserving national unity requires deliberate efforts to address long-standing political, economic, and social grievances.

‎Speaking on the importance of learning from history, Obasanjo observed that ethnic divisions, perceived injustice, inequality, and weak institutions continue to pose significant challenges to national cohesion. According to him, failure to confront these structural problems could deepen existing tensions and undermine the country's stability.

‎The former president emphasized that history should serve as a guide for policymakers and citizens alike, noting that sustainable peace cannot be achieved through rhetoric alone. He called for inclusive governance, stronger democratic institutions, equitable distribution of opportunities, and policies that promote justice and national integration across Nigeria's diverse communities.

‎Obasanjo further urged political leaders at all levels to embrace dialogue, tolerance, and constructive engagement in addressing the country's complex challenges. He maintained that national development can only thrive where there is mutual trust among citizens and confidence in public institutions.

‎He also encouraged Nigerians to reject divisive narratives capable of inflaming ethnic, regional, or religious tensions, stressing that unity remains essential for economic growth, security, and democratic consolidation. According to him, safeguarding the country's future requires collective responsibility from government, civil society, traditional institutions, religious leaders, and ordinary citizens.

‎The former president's remarks add to the growing national conversation on constitutional reforms, good governance, security, and national cohesion, as stakeholders continue to advocate measures aimed at strengthening Nigeria's democratic institutions and fostering lasting peace across the federation.
