A four-storey building under construction on Peter Odili Road in Port Harcourt collapsed on Wednesday, trapping several construction workers beneath the rubble.
The incident occurred barely 48 hours after a three-storey building collapsed on Slaughter Street in Rumuolumeni, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, heightening concerns over building safety standards and regulatory compliance in Rivers State.
Eyewitnesses at the scene told our correspondent that about seven workers were initially trapped when the structure gave way. Rescue efforts commenced immediately, and at least three victims were reportedly pulled out alive from the debris.
Emergency responders, security personnel, and relevant government agencies swiftly mobilised to the site as efforts continued to locate and rescue those who may still be trapped beneath the rubble.
The exact cause of the collapse has not yet been established. Authorities have commenced preliminary investigations to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Officials of the Rivers State Ministry of Urban Development and Physical Planning, alongside officers of the Nigeria Police Force, were present at the scene coordinating response efforts and assessing the situation.
An excavator has been deployed to assist rescue operations as emergency teams continue the painstaking search through the debris.
The latest collapse has renewed public calls for stricter enforcement of building regulations, improved construction oversight, and enhanced safety measures across the state to prevent similar incidents.
