Gov. Otu Says Parents’ Values Shaped His People-First Leadership
By Saviour Chimakpa Ogah
CALABAR — Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Edet Otu, has attributed his people-centred style of governance to the enduring values of faith, compassion, discipline and selfless service instilled in him by his late parents.
The governor made the remarks on Sunday during a memorial thanksgiving service held in honour of his parents, the late Elder and Mrs. Edet Okon Otu, at the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria, Duke Town Cathedral, Calabar.
Addressing family members, government officials, clergy and worshippers, Governor Otu said the principles he inherited from his parents continue to shape his leadership and the policies of his administration.
He noted that before becoming governor, he remained first the eldest son of his parents, whose guidance taught him that true success is measured by the positive impact one makes in the lives of others.
According to him, the open-door lifestyle of his parents inspired the administration's People First Agenda, which prioritises the welfare and development of Cross River residents.
Governor Otu paid tribute to his late mother, describing her as a dedicated educator who spent more than five decades mentoring young people, while praising his late father for his generosity and compassion, which made their home a haven for those in need.
He added that the values of humility, integrity, compassion and service continue to influence his government's efforts in education, employment, social welfare and other programmes aimed at improving the lives of citizens.
Delivering a sermon titled "Building the Family for Tomorrow," the Prelate of the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria, His Eminence, Most Rev. Dr. Ekpenyong Nyong Akpanika, urged parents to intentionally raise children with strong moral values, discipline and godly character.
Drawing lessons from biblical families, the cleric stressed that wealth and social status cannot replace responsible parenting. He warned against the decline of moral values in society and encouraged parents to place greater emphasis on the spiritual and character development of their children as a foundation for building enduring legacies.
