‎Residents of Owaza Community in Ukwa West Local Government Area of Abia State have been thrown into mourning following a major pipeline explosion that occurred in the early hours of Monday, June 22, 2026, causing widespread destruction in Umuololo Village and surrounding areas.

‎The explosion reportedly occurred along a high-pressure crude oil pipeline that transports petroleum products from the Imo River Flow Station in Owaza to Port Harcourt and Bonny. Preliminary reports indicate that the incident may have resulted from the deteriorating condition of the pipeline and possible system failure.

‎The blast caused significant damage to residential buildings, agricultural lands, economic crops, plantain plantations, and other community assets. Residents said the resulting oil spill further worsened the situation by contaminating farmlands and threatening the livelihoods of many families who depend on agriculture for survival.

‎Among those most affected is a prominent son of the community, Chief David Ogbonna, popularly known as "Chiwowo," whose residence suffered extensive structural damage. Several of his farmlands, crops, and other valuable property were also destroyed as a result of the explosion and subsequent oil spill.

‎Speaking on behalf of the community, spokesperson Chief Anselem Eletuo expressed concern over the condition of the pipeline, describing it as aged and overdue for replacement. He called on the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company (NPDC) and other relevant authorities to urgently intervene and provide relief to affected residents.

‎Chief Eletuo noted that many families have been displaced, while others face the prospect of food shortages following the destruction of their farmlands. He appealed for immediate environmental remediation, compensation for victims, and the provision of emergency relief materials to cushion the impact of the disaster.

‎He also urged community youths to remain peaceful and law-abiding, expressing confidence that both government agencies and the company responsible for the pipeline would take the necessary steps to address the situation and mitigate the effects of the oil spill.

‎As of the time of filing this report, the extent of environmental damage is still being assessed, while residents continue to call for swift action to prevent further harm and restore normalcy to the affected areas.
